Frequently Asked Questions about Selfheal Extract
What is self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) used for?
Self-heal is the common name for Prunella vulgaris, a low-growing perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae) found across Europe, Asia, and North America. It carries a remarkable collection of folk names - self-heal, heal-all, all-heal, woundwort, and carpenter's weed among them - that reflect the high regard European herbalists historically held for the plant. In traditional Chinese medicine the dried flower spike is known as xia ku cao. The aerial parts contain constituents such as rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, and other plant compounds characteristic of the species. Today self-heal is valued simply as part of a general wellness routine. Our alcohol-free extract is prepared from the dried herb in a base of vegetable glycerin, giving a convenient liquid that can be taken in water, tea, or juice. This is a dietary supplement intended to support general wellness; it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free glycerite and the tincture?
Both are liquid extracts of the same dried self-heal herb; the difference is the solvent. This alcohol-free version uses vegetable glycerin (a glycerite), with no alcohol - a good choice for those who prefer to avoid it. The tincture version uses a traditional alcohol base, which some prefer for its long shelf life and traditional extraction profile. Both are produced in our FDA-registered Hawaii facility.
What is the botanical background of Prunella vulgaris, and why so many names?
Self-heal belongs to the family Lamiaceae, the mint family, and the species is Prunella vulgaris. It is a short creeping perennial with a distinctive cylindrical spike of violet-blue flowers, common in lawns, meadows, and woodland edges across the Northern Hemisphere. Its many English names - self-heal, heal-all, all-heal, woundwort, sicklewort, and carpenter's weed - come from its long-standing reputation in European folk herbalism; under the old Doctrine of Signatures the hooked upper lip of the flower was thought to resemble a billhook or sickle. In traditional Chinese medicine the dried flower spike is called xia ku cao, meaning roughly "summer-dry herb," because the spike browns and dries in midsummer; in formulas it is listed as Spica Prunellae. Self-heal should not be confused with unrelated uses of the word "prunella," which is also a personal name and the name of a group of small birds (the accentors). Our product is the aerial herb of Prunella vulgaris.
How do I use the alcohol-free self-heal extract?
Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 3 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Shake well before use. Because this is an alcohol-free glycerite, refrigerate after opening to preserve freshness. Keep out of the reach of children.
Are there any precautions with self-heal?
Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of culinary and herbal use and is generally well tolerated. As it is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), anyone with known allergies to mint-family plants should use caution. If you are taking prescription medication - particularly for blood pressure or blood thinning - speak with your pharmacist or healthcare practitioner before adding any new botanical, as a precaution. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare practitioner before use, as data is limited. Begin with a small serving to see how you respond. Discontinue use and seek advice if you experience an allergic reaction. Keep out of the reach of children. This product is a dietary supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
